Introduction For the Casual Reader:
The following are short narratives from my experiences this past year in Peru
and South Africa. In May and June, I worked as a research assistant for a macaw
research project in the province of Madre de Dios in southeast Peru. I lived
at a small research station/tourist lodge six hours upriver by motorized canoe
from the nearest town. The African trip was a program sponsored by the Environmental
Studies Department of Dartmouth College; I was part of a group of twenty students
and two professors that traveled around the country for 10 weeks, studying various
local environmental issues. The stories here are in no particular order and
are really no more than glorified versions of my favorite journal entries. I
hope you enjoy them, and if you have any questions or want to discuss anything
you read, don't hesitate to email me (I love talking about these places).
